M & I Interiors and AYA Youth Collective: Honoring Culture and Building Community on Mexican Independence Day

On Mexican Independence Day, M & I Interiors joined AYA Youth Collective to share traditional food and support youth facing homelessness. The celebration highlighted how culture and service can unite communities, strengthen belonging, and honor traditions while building resilience.

On September 16, Mexican Independence Day, we had the opportunity to celebrate in a way that was both cultural and deeply meaningful.

At M & I Interiors, we believe volunteering is more than giving—it is connection and growth. That belief guided us as we partnered with AYA Youth Collective to sponsor and serve a meal for youth experiencing homelessness and instability.

Sharing Mexican food on this day of cultural pride reminded us that community is built not only on traditions but also on showing up where people need it most.

Who Is AYA Youth Collective?

Grand Rapids is home to many organizations making a difference, and AYA Youth Collective stands out.

AYA Youth Collective serves young people ages 14–24 who are experiencing homelessness or instability. Their programs provide safe spaces, housing resources, mentorship, and support that help youth build belonging and stability during critical years of their lives.

Why We Partnered with AYA

Supporting AYA aligns with our values at M & I Interiors. Their focus on connection, compassion, and opportunity reflects our belief that a stronger community comes from investing in people.

Partnering with AYA gave us a way to support the next generation while honoring Mexican Independence Day in a way that was inclusive and purposeful.

Sharing Culture Through Food

Food has always been a bridge between people and cultures. For this celebration, it became both nourishment and a gesture of care.

Providing a Meal with Meaning

We sponsored and catered traditional Mexican dishes, offering flavors that connected the day’s cultural significance to the youth we served.

The meal wasn’t just about filling plates—it was about creating a sense of belonging and joy. For many, a warm meal served in a spirit of celebration can be a reminder that they are seen, valued, and supported.

Celebrating Mexican Independence Day

This national holiday honors Mexico’s fight for freedom, and it carries deep cultural pride for many in our community.

Sharing this moment with the youth at AYA connected the celebration of heritage to a celebration of humanity. It was a way of saying that everyone deserves to be part of something larger, no matter their circumstances.

The Power of Cultural Celebration in Service

Celebrating Mexican Independence Day through service gave the event deeper meaning. It was not only about marking a holiday but about using culture as a way to uplift others.

Honoring Heritage Through Action

Mexican Independence Day is a moment of pride and reflection, and tying it to volunteering reminded us that culture becomes strongest when it inspires generosity. Sharing food rooted in tradition showed how heritage can bring comfort, joy, and unity—even in challenging circumstances.

Creating Shared Experiences

Blending cultural celebration with community service created an experience where everyone could feel part of something larger.

The youth at AYA connected with traditions that may have been new to them, while our team connected more deeply with the community we serve. These shared experiences build lasting understanding and belonging.

Why Community Matters: Honoring Culture While Supporting Community Growth

Our experience at AYA Youth Collective reinforced the idea that community is about connection, compassion, and growth.

1. Building Connection Through Service

Volunteering gave us the chance to connect with young people whose stories and resilience inspire us. Serving food was a simple act, but the conversations, smiles, and moments of recognition built bridges that extend beyond a single event.

2. Growth for Everyone Involved

Acts of service change not only the lives of those being supported but also those who give.

For our team, this was an opportunity to grow in empathy and understanding. It reminded us that giving time and resources strengthens our own sense of purpose as much as it helps others.

3. Strengthening the Fabric of Community

Communities flourish when businesses, nonprofits, and individuals come together.

Partnering with AYA showed us that every contribution—whether it is food, time, or sponsorship—creates ripples of impact. Those ripples spread outward, strengthening the bonds that make our city more resilient and compassionate.

Final Thoughts

Serving alongside AYA Youth Collective on Mexican Independence Day allowed us to put our values into practice.

Sponsoring and catering a meal was not only about providing food—it was about creating a moment of dignity, comfort, and connection for youth who deserve to feel supported and celebrated.

This experience reminded us that the most meaningful contributions often happen in simple acts of service. We are proud to stand with organizations like AYA that make a direct difference in the lives of young people, and we look forward to continuing to support efforts that strengthen Grand Rapids.

For us at M & I Interiors, building community will always mean turning commitment into action.
